...and some new embroidery done by Amal binti Hamid Al-Chania

In need for some inspiration? Amal binti Hamid Al-Chania has recently done some lovely embroidery which she kindly shares at her blog - you can find her whole post and more pictures here:

AAAARGH!!!

...why Aaaargh? *lol* not everyone is a fan of German Brick Stitch (which I can very good understand after struggling with this technique for some times now) but you should read more about it yourself... ;)

...but German Brick stitch is just one technique out of many others - I like her embroidered letters - yeah, you should definitely check out the other pics ;)

...want to support your kingdom? ...the Dragon's Den is now on-line!!! :)

...and by courtesy of Mistress Jaelle I may inform you about:

The Dragon's Den is now on-line!!

The Dragon's Den is now available on-line and has Drachenwald order regalia for sale, including Panache, Lindquist ring, and PCS patches, rings that are very close to what a Lindquist ring should look like, Drachenwald patches, and Drachenwald hoods for sale.

To see our merchandise, go to our website at

Dragon's Den exists to raise money to help assorted Drachenwald projects. Since we opened we have paid for new coronets for the crown prince and princess, sent peers to South Africa to work with our shires there, gave money to ID to send marshals to Iceland, provided the royalty with order regalia to give out to recipients, supported the scribal office with money for supplies, etc.

If you wish to purchase anything, or if you have any questions, please write to us off list at jgerjuoy_@_yahoo_._com (without the "_"!!)

Yours in service,

Honor and Jaelle,
Proprietors

FAQ - Giftbasket confusion

Some members of the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild contribute or would like to contribute to the one or other "giftbasket" of our kingdom, therefore I thought it would be nice to forward this message of Mistress Katheryn Hebenstreitz to you for your information. :)

...btw. how such gifts for a "giftbasket" or the "queens basket" could look like -> a posting about the "Estrella Gift Basket" can be found at the new royal "Treasures of Drachenwald" blog.

__________..--~~<+>~~--..__________

"Greetings!

I have gotten a few questions about giftbaskets because there seems to be a lot of different names for them circulating which has caused some confusion.
People don't seem to know who to contact concerning items for giftbaskets and how many Kingdoms that will be recieveing the gifts.
So here goes:

Pennsic giftbasket - that is a giftbasket that is given away by the Royalty during the state dinner at Pennsic. Nowadays we get an assigned Kingdom to exchange gifts with hence we no longer need to produce big amounts of the same type of object, we do however need to get together a kick ass basket to show of the splendure of the artisans of the Kingdom! This giftbasket is my own pet project and if anyone wants to contribute to this you should contact me, Katheryn Hebenstreitz.

Estrella giftbasket - this is a giftbasket that is given away by our Royalty IF they decide to go to Estrella. This far it has only happened at rare occasions and our current King and Queen WILL go to Estrella! This giftbasket has also switched into being an exchange with only ONE Kingdom (lets hope it stays this way!), and it is Their Majesties chamberlain, Viscountess Whilja who is in charge of getting items for this years giftbasket. The Kingdom to recieve the Drachenwald giftbasket is Calontir.

The Queens Tea gifts - when it was decided that you would only swap gifts with one Kingdom at Pennsic, some Qeens felt that they wanted to give away something small to all other Queens during a Queens Tea. This has been different every year - one year there was an actual gift exchange (as far as I remember) and other years the Queen hosting the tea has been giving her guests some gifts. And each Queen can host her own Queens Tea during Pennsic so this one is a bit tricky to deal with. Previously Duchess Fiona has graciously taken on the task to get objects together for this new addition to the giftlist. I am however unsure who will be in charge this upcoming Pennsic. This is a rather straining task since you need to get basically 18 small gifts together - preferebly similar/the same items in each…

Queens basket - the only conclusion I can draw is that this has become a short name of the above described Queens Tea gifts. :D

Now, beyond all theese giftbaskets the Royalty is ALWAYS in need of largess! They need something to give all those who catch their attention and that perhaps can't recieve an award but who should get recognized by getting a gift from the Royalty.
And putting all theese things together it makes for a huge amount of items that the Royalt needs to a) look good b) make people happy c) make Drachenwald look as awesome as it is by giving the most fabulous gifts at events across the pond!

So please, anyone who has some time to spare - make something that can be included in any of the above baskets or the general largess!
Now I will go back to the embroidery I am making as a part of the Estrella giftbasket that King Vitus and Queen Eleonora will hand over at Estrella!

In service
Katheryn Hebenstreitz

PS: please feel free to spread the word to avoid any more confusion about all theese giftbaskets!"

new royal blog "Treasures of Drachenwald" ! :)

I just read the most recent mails of the Drachenwald Mailing List (DML) and was very pleased to read an eMail written by Mistress Bridget introducing a new royal blog:

Treasures of Drachenwald

"... It is their hope that through this medium they can reach the entire
Kingdom of Drachenwald and share not only stories from their reign but
also to show-case all the people of this kingdom who contribute, share and
do all that they can to make it what it is. In the Queen's own words these
people are "the Treasures of Drachenwald". ..."

I think this is a great idea and I am very looking forward to read the next postings :)

Btw. the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild is a guild of the "Kingdom of Drachenwald" - Drachenwald is a local group (Europe & South Africa) within the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) - you can find more information here:

New Textile challenge :)

For your information - a new Textile challenge starts first of June and I may forward you the following text concerning the new challenge:

"Greetings to the Populace of Drachenwlad
I come forth to issue a Textile challenge
This challenge is specifically set towards those that have not had the opportunity to sew a garment/object by hand.
Sewers that are experienced in hand stitching items will not be excluded, but this is meant as a chance for those with no experience in this realm to get a start.
The Challenge I propose is that all persons joining the challenge pick a garment or object of textile nature, no matter how small or large, i.e. a pilgrim bag, a Coif or any type of hat, socks, flag, gloves etc., and have at least one form of documentation for its existence during the SCA time period.
Acceptable forms of documentation for this project will be paintings/woodcuts/drawings with the desired object in it or a picture of the desired object.
The challenge starts first of June and will end one year later. People can join the challenge at any time during this year.
A blog will be made where all participants can post pictures and descriptions of their progress (http://first-timehandsewingchallenge.blogspot.com/).
All interested in joining this challenge please contact me at Gottfriedkilianus @ yahoo . com

Gottfried"

Embroidery Challenge 2009

Dear honourable Lords and Ladies, gentle members of the "Dragon Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

A new year started and also a new challenge - many thanks to Mistress Anya who wrote the following invitation for our new challenge, that I may forward to you.
...btw. many thanks to Lady Jahanarabanu who provided the great idea for the new requirements of '25% a new documented stitch' and/or '25% a new design element' - to make it possible for people who have an early persona to join our challenge.

Best regards from Vienna

Hi all! It's that time again!
I am pleased to announce the beginning of our third annual embroidery challenge! This year, due to last year's many ambitious projects, we decided to keep the same theme. Those who aren't finished with last year's projects will use the next challenge to finish up, while allowing new embroiderers to join.
Anyone is whole-heartedly welcome to participate! The guidelines are as follows: The theme is "something to keep you warm", which means now is your chance to make and embroider those hats, gloves, cloaks, coats, hose, etc you've been meaning to start forever! The projects must be done in at least 25% a documented stitch you've never tried before, and/or 25% a new design element you've never tried before.
You can find the blog here: http://keep-you-warm-2.blogspot.com/
If you are interested in taking part, please email either me, Racaire, or Jahhanara through the blog.
Looking forward to seeing all of you there!!!!
Anya

Grüße an alle!
