Dear honourable Lords and Ladies,
dear gentle members of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

I wish you a great 2012 and hope everyone of you had a great New Year's Eve.

The year 2012 already starts with a very interesting information - the guild welcomes a new local guild head in Aarnimetsä.
First I want to thank Lady Fiora for her great work as the former guild head of Aarnimetsä - Fiora, thank you very much for your great work over so many years - you inspired so many people! :)
...and it is a great honor for me to be the one who may introduce Fru Ida Juhanantytär as the new local guild head of Aarnimetsä to you and I am also happy to forward the following text from Fru Juhanantytär to you:

Dear people in Drachenwald,
My name is Fru Ida Juhanantytär.

And I got a really good post as the new head of the Aarnimetsä’s embroidery guild.
Right after those words I have to start thanking and praising my predecessor, Donna Fiora, who has done big work by sitting us all in the same circle, and helped sharing our secrets among each other. And she somehow got us all to confess that there are no secrets in embroidery, there’s just passion and learning.
I can’t say if it was her who first showed her unfinished work saying “this is what I been doing lately”, but definitely, without that circle of skirts, her small jug of good wine and that relaxed cackle of female voices talking about their needles, spins and ideas. I would never have shown my own works to anybody, or had time to learn my own favourite stitches. Donna Fiora has inspired and encouraged me, and humbly saying right after these words “no, I didn’t do that much.”

We have lot of skilful embroiders in Aarnimetsä, and I think our guilds purpose is to gather all of us into the same place. Our guild is the meeting point, showroom, study and gossip house for our own passion: stitches, yarns, needles and hundreds of different ways to create something unique from textiles.
I hope that we keep on meeting in cantons and events, showing our best and worst and keep gathering new and old embroiders together.

So, who am I?
I started my embroiding by using thick wool-yarn on fleece, it was something on a hood, it’s still unfinished and my big sister has it somewhere just to scare me some day. That’s how I started at my SCA-lifestyle somewhere circa 1998.
Nowadays I prefer linen or smooth wool as a textile, and my favourite yarns are cottons, I have just started to use woollen yarns. (maybe one day I will try my luck with silk, but it’s far in the future.)
My frame is always round, wooden, light one, and last time I counted I had it in five different sizes. I always lose my scissors during big works, and I keep on looking for that perfect needle.
My favourite stitches are nowadays split-stitch or change-stitch, but I also like satin-, and padded-stitch. I am a bit dyslexic and it seems that it really matters over counted-techniques, like blackwork. I work more by free hand or try to learn styles like they used in Opus Anglicanum.

I’m also the seneschal of Miehonlinna, canton in the South-East Finland. I was founding Miehonlinna in circa 2000. We are active but small group, very lovely people.

In mundane I work half-time as a potter, and full day as cleaner lady at hospital.
I read books a lot. I watch detective-DVDs while doing my textile crafts.
I live in South-West Finland, even I’m originally from the eastern side of the country.
If I don’t get my daily amount of black tea I get cranky, and my motto is to always have a good picnic, nevertheless what else the day would bring to me. And I love baking.

We have dragons - the challenge

So how is the challenge going? Here's my (Renikas) contribution, finished just now and I aim to ship it this weekend.

This is the dragons den, filled with jewels and precious things. Embroidery in red and golden silk on dark blue wool. I have stitched some small pieces of red cloth on the dragons head, knee and elbow in order to create more of a 3D-effect and then covered it with silk in split-stitch. The jewels are glass beads and then I outlined some artefacts with gold thread.

My lords and ladies. Greetings from Aarnimetsä!
I must show you pictures of all these wonderful patches which have arrived for the guilds next wallhanging, The "We have dragons"-wallhanging... and we surely do have lot of dragons!

I'm posting these photos as a new local guild elder of Aarnimetsä region, And it's great to step into such a lovely pair of guild elder slippers from my predecessor, Donna Fiora, who has made a great job by inspiring all these skillful hands of Aarnimetsä to work with these patches.
Here are no less than 14 wonderlfull patches, all made in Aarnimetsa!

First we have three patches made by Maria Tavintytär, she has told that she became inspired by leftover fabric at Donna Fioras Wool-embroidering 101-meeting, during last spring. You can read her own stories about these jolly dragons here (it's only in finnish)
Her first dragon is calling "long live the king and queen of Drachenwald" over the mountain top.

Maria Taavistytär's second dragon, called by her as The Brother-in-law, for the first dragon.

Maria Taavintytär's thrid dragon, red backgroud has been inlaid into the blue one by stiching.
It's dedicated to Aarnimetsä.
And she has also made this brave knight, who is fighting under a dragon pennant!

Next patch is beatiful work by Beata. I simply love the colours of this work.

Next four Dragons were suprise to me, if you may.
These are made by my skillfull big sister, Fru Kattarina Juhanantytär, who is a great seamstress.
Now I found out that she is an good at embroidery too! She started embroidering in one night after ten- or fifteen-year pause. And these are what she made..

First after the long pause, she said it took few tries, but still.

The second and the third dragons.

The fourth one is my special favorite from her series.. and she's making even more patches! (she said there's no need to stop the wagons now after the slow start.)

I must introduce you Lady Gytha Bielke, the senescall of the Canton of Unikankare.
She tells me these tiny dragons were meant for another project, but she felt inspired by dragons and decided to use her works as a center for bigger patches.

Her first pink dragon is surrounded by dogs.

Second one didn't have any better luck with deer.
This dragon is under a lion.. poor thing!
But, never mess with dragons! Here's one burning down a building!

And here are a whole buch of dragons are frying up a sailing boat and her crew in the blazing winds of horror.
Aren't these patches most clever way to tell stories about dragons?

November already started and December isn't far away - therefore I wish you all a wonderful christmas time - I hope your time will be filled with nice events, love and joy.
I am very sorry but due to a very busy mundane life I wasn't able to send out a newsletter for October - in the future I will try to send out a guild newsletter at least every 2 - 3 months.

...and again I am very happy that I may present another lovely project of a Guild member to you -

2nd Guild Project - "We have Dragons"
- Fabric: wool
- Fabric size: 20,0 x 20,0 cm (7,9 x 7,9 inch) + ca. 1,5 cm (0,6 inch)
Surplus for sewing
- Fabric color: every color allowed
- Embroidery: every technique allowed
- Important restrictions: 1) at least one dragon per patch (or more!) ; 2)
the basic fabric for the patch should be wool, you can use silk, linen,
wool, metal,... (thread or fabric) to embroider it
- End date: October 2011 (please send in your patches till 1st of October)
- The project is open to everyone - you don't need to be a Guild member to
join this project.
- Every embroidery technique and skill is welcome - please don't hesitate
to contact me if you are interested!!
If you ever had a favourite picture or story including at least one or
more dragons - this is the time to embroider it!
Dragons fighting against knights, dragons sleeping at the top of a hoard,
dragons flying above woods, lakes, fjords, mountains; dragons eating or
scaring virgins, a dragon mother surrounded by kids, dragons who just lost
their fight against the knight (or the other way round), ... just take a
journey through your memories and the old stories you read in books or
you've been told - lets bring the old legends to life again! :)
...and if your embroidery is based on an old myth - I really wouldn't mind
if you tell us the old myth by posting a picture of your embroidery and a
short text telling the legend (and if you don't like to post it by
yourself, you can still send me your photo and your text and I will do
that for you).
Thinking of all people and also the newcomers in some regions, who maybe
haven't done a lot of wool embroidery till now, I would ask the lords and
ladies who have some experience in wool embroidery to screw up their
courage and to offer one or more wool embroidery classes at the next
events they will attend or at a private embroidery & sewing evening for
your local group - it would be great to see more lovely applique,
intarsia,... and all the other possible kinds of wool embroidery in the
future!

And last but not least - because of the great support and interest into
our first guild project shown by the local guild in Aarnimetsä, the second
guild project will be assembled by the local guild in Aarnimetsä under the
gentle guidance of the local guild head Lady Fiora. Many thanks to Lady
Fiora for her great help.
...and again the artisan who makes the most patches will get a small
embroidered gift from the guild head. :)

Again I am very happy to be able to present another lovely project to you - this time a lovely embroidery of the very talented Lady Hilkka Susinen:

I saw this lovely embroidery irl at Rhaglan and her stitches are very small and even - very lovely embroidery and the dragon is just too cute. *lol*

Hilkka is also a member of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild", which is a guild of the Kingdom of Drachenwald within the SCA and she is living in the beautiful lands of The Principality of Insulae Draconis (Iceland, Ireland & United Kingdom). :)

And some words for you from the artist - Hilkka was so nice to send me also her documentation for the A&S competition and also the story of 'Odo de Feu' to share it with you:

Documentation
The stitches used are:
Stem Stitch, Chain Stitch, Split Stitch, and French Knot.

Material:
Wool base fabric, cotton embroidery floss

Technique:Stem-Stich, Chain-Stitch, Split-Stitch and French Knot

Inspiration:
This piece has both an historical and an SCA inspiration. The historical inspiration is from Beowulf, in which the robbery of a chalice from the dragon's hoard causes it to fly out and wreak havoc along the Geats2. The style, as discussed below, is adapted from an early 9th-century sledge carving found in the Norwegian Oseberg queen's burial. In this version, the dragon is upright and, like the Beowulf dragon, winged. The chalice is shown disproportionately large to emphasize its importance to the story. The choice of an early 9th century model represents an early-to-moderate view of the dating of Beowulf (or at least the basic story), although dates suggested for the poem range from the latter part of the 7th century to the beginning of the eleventh and the issue of Scandinavian influence on it is equally debated3.
On the SCA side, the patch has been made for this year's wall hanging initiated by the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild “We have Dragons”. It is a depiction of the noble dragon Odo de Feu of the Costa del Lough Rí, an honourable member of the Shire of Eplaheimr and welcome guest at so many of our events, with a chalice that might have started out in the early mediaeval church near Odo's home...
Historical Design Reference:
The design is an adaptation of a sledge carving. It came from one of several sledges found in the Oseberg Burial Mound4 (820 A.D.), three of them were covered in carvings and most likely ceremonial. The carving-motif singled out for this project shows a dragon and possibly a cat.
As mentioned above, the basic outline of the dragon has been altered to a “rampant” pose and given wings to fit with both the Beowulf description and the noble dragon Odo de Feu. The chalice's basic shape is based on the Tassilo chalice6, a characteristic chalice of the style which was common at least through the time of Theophilus; the ornamentation is much simpler than the Tassilo chalice, which shows saints' faces that would be inappropriate for an early Northern piece, but also has bands and sections of twining and knotwork designs interspersed.
Notes on the Work:
Though the embroidery floss used to complete this project is cotton, in period it would have been wool or silk thread. I chose to used cotton thread for reasons of availability in Ireland today. Silk thread would have been used during the Viking age for embroidery and tablet weaving; full garments made from silk would not have been comon. Garments most often were made from either wool or linen7.
The base fabric is wool, which would have been done in Viking age as well.
The earliest finds for the “French Knot” stitch date to the 14th century. I did, however, include it in my work as I find it works well, giving the impression of gemstones on the chalice. The Tassiliokelch shows several rows of gemstones embedded in the gildings around the knob.
At this point the material is zig-zaged with the sewing machine.
The piece will form part of this year's wall-hanging from the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild “We have Dragons”. The demensions (20cm x 20cm) are indicated with modern sewing thread for assembly-purpose only.

Lord Odo de Feu and the Chalice
Once upon a time there lived a dragon on the western marshes of Lough Devnaree1, a dragon so fierce, no-one dares to speak his name nor tell his story. So here is the story of his cousin instead:
In a time long gone, in the heartlands of Lough Devnaree, there lived a dragon, known as Lord Odo de Feu of the Costa del Lough Rí2, but everyone just called him “Odo”. Unlike his cousin, he was was the most gentle of all dragons, though his humour could be on the rough side.
As it happened, not far from his dwelling a new church was to be build. An army of tradesmen descended onto the lands around a holy well and over the next few summers it grew into a monastary complex with the bee-hive-church – as it was the coustom at the time – forming its centre of spirituality and power3.
One day, his fierce cousin from the western marshes won a gruesome victoty over his longtime enemy who hailed from the southern bogs4.
Customs now dictated, that he would have his relations over to celebrate his recent success. Neither in the mood to put up with any of them nor to share his loot, but having to comply with ancient customs, he limited the amount of liquid plunder shared to one glass for each of his guest; may be hoping, none would take upon him a jurney as arduous for such limited reward.
It has to be said that Odo was particularly fond of a sip once in a while and may be even a bit too fond of it at others.
Seeing that even with the finest horses breed these days it hardly worthes the trip for only a short stay, Odo said to himself, “there must be a way to make this journey worth while.” and see, there was; Lord Odo de Feu remembered folks telling of chalices the humans of the holy dwelling used; mocking him off his small frame, saying they'd be too large for him event to lift and drink from it, nevermind “borrowing” one.
As night fell, Odo rose to the skys and silently made his way to the church, circling over the religious compund until the last lights went dim, he descended. Silently creaping into the building housing the artefacts, he got hold of a small chalice, a child's one really, but of perfect size for him to seize.
The day of the dreaded celebrations grew closer and the fierce dragon's spirits rose with every day and every hour that passed without a single one of his relatives showing his face – or wine glass for this matter – until, almost at the last minute, our beloved Lord Odo de Feu, struggling under the weight of the chalice, arived at the western marches of Lough Devnaree.
The fierce dragon was furious, not only was he obliged to make good on his promis and fulfill old customs, but he realised he had been tricked. Worst of all, there was nothing he could do about it but to give Odo his share of the loot.

Newsletter September 2011 - featuring Siubhans embroidered cloak

I hope you all had a great summer and are already prepared for autumn and winter.

...and speaking about the cold time of the year I am again very pleased that I may present another lovely project of a Guild member to you - Siubhans lovely embroidered cloak: http://dragonsembroiderers.blogspot.com/2011/08/embroidered-cloak.html
...please take some time and take a look at her posting - this is really a very awesome embroidery project.

The Guild Project 2011 - "We have Dragons" - will reach its end soon therefore I once again included the project details for you.
...but please don't fear, Fiora and I already spoke about enlarging the end date to make it to a real anual project and to give everyone some more time for more to embroider some additional patches.

2nd Guild Project - "We have Dragons"

- Fabric: wool
- Fabric size: 20,0 x 20,0 cm (7,9 x 7,9 inch) + ca. 1,5 cm (0,6 inch)
Surplus for sewing
- Fabric color: every color allowed
- Embroidery: every technique allowed
- Important restrictions: 1) at least one dragon per patch (or more!) ; 2)
the basic fabric for the patch should be wool, you can use silk, linen,
wool, metal,... (thread or fabric) to embroider it
- End date: October 2011 (please send in your patches till 1st of October)
- The project is open to everyone - you don't need to be a Guild member to
join this project.
- Every embroidery technique and skill is welcome - please don't hesitate
to contact me if you are interested!!

If you ever had a favourite picture or story including at least one or
more dragons - this is the time to embroider it!
Dragons fighting against knights, dragons sleeping at the top of a hoard,
dragons flying above woods, lakes, fjords, mountains; dragons eating or
scaring virgins, a dragon mother surrounded by kids, dragons who just lost
their fight against the knight (or the other way round), ... just take a
journey through your memories and the old stories you read in books or
you've been told - lets bring the old legends to life again! :)

...and if your embroidery is based on an old myth - I really wouldn't mind
if you tell us the old myth by posting a picture of your embroidery and a
short text telling the legend (and if you don't like to post it by
yourself, you can still send me your photo and your text and I will do
that for you).

Thinking of all people and also the newcomers in some regions, who maybe
haven't done a lot of wool embroidery till now, I would ask the lords and
ladies who have some experience in wool embroidery to screw up their
courage and to offer one or more wool embroidery classes at the next
events they will attend or at a private embroidery & sewing evening for
your local group - it would be great to see more lovely applique,
intarsia,... and all the other possible kinds of wool embroidery in the
future!

And last but not least - because of the great support and interest into
our first guild project shown by the local guild in Aarnimetsä, the second
guild project will be assembled by the local guild in Aarnimetsä under the
gentle guidance of the local guild head Lady Fiora. Many thanks to Lady
Fiora for her great help.

...and again the artisan who makes the most patches will get a small
embroidered gift from the guild head. :)

Turnier des Herzwalds II Badges...

It's been quite a while since I posted anything. But I made up two Badges for Turnier des Herzwaldes II. One for the Tourney Champion and one for the Nobleman of the Tourney. Granted, Sir Gerhardt von Wuestenburg won both, but they were fun to make.The swords and II were split stitch, the trees surface couched, the heart made with Klosterstitch and the black background was made with another type of couching.

Embroidered cloak

I've finished the embroidery on Lutr's cloak. I think I started this 3.5 years ago, but it has had times where I haven't worked on it, like when it was in our shipment of stuff from the UK and more recently when I was waiting for the green silk to arrive. I do need to line it now and who knows how long it will take me to get around to that right now. It's a bit daunting as I'm sure the linen isn't wide enough to line the cloak without piecing it. It has been long enough since cutting out the cloak that I'll have to re-figure out how to fold the fabric to cut half circles.
Here are some pictures.
For those who care about details, I used a relatively heavy wool bought in London. The embroidery was done with 2/12 Gemstone Silk from Halcyon yarn. I had help projecting the image onto the wool and drawing it on with chalk (Thanks J!) Since the chalk didn't seem like it would hold up long, I basically basted along the lines with red sewing thread so I could go back and embroider without worrying about the lines. I used yellow to do the outlines and then all I had to do was fill in. I filled in by starting along the outline and working my way toward the center in a circle. This led to some interesting patterns when the light hits just right. That might not be visible in the pictures. I liked the effect. We decided to give the dragons blue eyes and a green nose...just to spice it up a bit.

I've gotten lots of comments over the years on this cloak, usually along the lines of "you must really love your husband".

The project started when Lutr asked me to make him a new cloak and to put embroidery on it. I was thinking something relatively small on the front so I said "sure!". Then he explained what he wanted. I sighed and said, not as enthusiastically, "OK".

Even though I have been tempted to add a small X on one of the pieces with small text that says "you are here", because of how it kind of looks like a crazy road map, I haven't done it...yet.
The current plan is to line the cloak in blue linen. Because it is linen and not silk, the color isn't a jewel tone like the silk of the embroidery. I hope it will look OK. I plan on hemming the two layers separately along the bottom of the cloak so that if one or the other stretches, it won't hang funny. The wool layer has already been worn many times...often with the needle still in it wherever I was currently working.

This year at Double Wars we will jointly work on some parts of the Pennsiv giftbasket. Lady Jahanara is currently weaving the fabric to make two shoulder bags – one each for the King and Queen who will recieve our gift. Theese bags will contain things that might be useful for a King and Queen to have with them.
So, here is a list of specific items that I would like them to contain. If you wish to make a certain item - let me know and I will make sure that we won't end up with to many of one item and to few of another. If you think of something else that could be useful that is NOT on this list - let me know!
This is just a part of the gift so we will still need more items! This is just for a Kings and Queens kit that could be useful for them to have close by at any time!

2 x a small book to take notes in
2 x a small sewing kit for emerency mending, a needle book, one or two sewing needles and small wooden thread spools (I will provide small thread snippers, and all the other parts could ofcourse be made by different people.)
2 x embroidered handkerchief
2 x small bags to either hold duct tape or possibly make up
2 x coifs as emergency head wear
fingerlooped or woven ribbons for lacing for both bags

Any former kings or queens how could add to the list??? What do you think could be a good thing for theese bags?
At DW we will put the bags together and decorate them. The Queens bag will get an apliqued rose and what we will do on the kings bag I don't know at the moment, but we will come up with something!
And as soon as we know what kingdom we're swaping gifts with we could make a few tokens that the king and queen could have in their bags if they unexpectedly want to thank someone who helps out. Even tokens suitable for children would be good!

Unfortunatelly for the newsletter for this summer months I run out of artisans and projects which I could feature - I hope after the summer time I will have again enough projects which I may feature - and therefore I decided to feature an "old" project of mine and I admit it's one of my favourite projects:

Racaires Weiberlisten Wallhanging

I am also a member of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild", which is a guild of the Kingdom of Drachenwald within the SCA and I am the Guild Head of the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild and also the local Guild Head for the Frankmark region. I am living in the beautiful lands of Knights Crossing. :)

And some words for you about the project:

My inspiration for this project is the Weiberlisten Teppich/ Maltererteppich - a beautiful medieval wallhanging done in Klosterstich - the only picture which is not inspired/based on this wallhanging ist the last one on the right in the bottom row - this one is inspired by the „Manessische Liederhandschrift“.

It took me about 3 years to complete this Wallhanging and I took pictures of the several steps, which can be found at my blog - Wallhanging Project - including my long fight against the moths and pictures of the Klosterstich repair work.

I also used Klosterstich for this embroidery and the fine wool threads from http://www.renaissancedyeing.com/ - btw. you can find my Klosterstich handout here.

At DW we will put the bags together and decorate them. The Queens bag will get an apliqued rose and what we will do on the kings bag I don't know at the moment, but we will come up with something!

And as soon as we know what kingdom we're swaping gifts with we could make a few tokens that the king and queen could have in their bags if they unexpectedly want to thank someone who helps out. Even tokens suitable for children would be good!

Again I am very happy to be able to present another lovely project to you - this time of the very talented Lady Jahanarabanu Vivana:

Jahanara is also a member of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild", which is a guild of the Kingdom of Drachenwald within the SCA and she is the regional Guild Head for Insulae Draconis.
Furthermore she is also a member of the ID Fibre Interest Group, living in the beautiful lands of The Principality of Insulae Draconis (Iceland, Ireland & United Kingdom). :)

And some words for you from the artist:

Jahanarabanu Vivana is a 7th C Persian women.

Jahanara has been in the SCA for 15 years. In that time she has always enjoyed the Arts and Sciences. Over the years, she has learned costuming, embroidery, spinning, embroidery and weaving.

Jahanara's most recent project was weaving 4.5 yards of fabric for the Pennsic Gift Exchange. Lady Katherine was kind enough to leave the design completely up to me. I chose to weave a striped fabric. Based on my research a variety of stripes were used during the Middle Ages. In order to choose the colors, I referred to a colour sampler, I had recently woven. The next decision was the weave structure. I have been focusing on twills this year and Lady Genvieve suggested a diamond weave.

As I didn't want the weave and fabric to distract too much from the embroidery that will be appliqued on, I chose a single diamond with a dark weft. Diamond weaves are common throughout the Middle Ages and date back to the 3rd/4th C AD (Cambridge History of Western Textiles). This weave was one of the most common amoung Viking, Anglo-Saxon and a variety of other cultures.

My upcoming projects includes weaving more fabric for bags, updating my website (www.thepurplelotus.org), and organising the Textile Symposium at Fair Raglan. I hope that all ID members of the Guild will also join the ID Fibre Interest Group. So far we have hosted several competitions and last year's Textile Day at Raglan. Anyone who is interested in teaching a Textile Class at Raglan this year or joining the ID Fibre Interest Group may contact me at jahanara@thepurplelotus.org.

2nd Guild Project - "We have Dragons"

- Fabric: wool
- Fabric size: 20,0 x 20,0 cm (7,9 x 7,9 inch) + ca. 1,5 cm (0,6 inch) Surplus for sewing
- Fabric color: every color allowed
- Embroidery: every technique allowed
- Important restrictions: 1) at least one dragon per patch (or more!) ; 2) the basic fabric for the patch should be wool, you can use silk, linen, wool, metal,... (thread or fabric) to embroider it
- End date: October 2011 (please send in your patches till 1st of October)
- The project is open to everyone - you don't need to be a Guild member to join this project.
- Every embroidery technique and skill is welcome - please don't hesitate to contact me if you are interested!!

If you ever had a favourite picture or story including at least one or more dragons - this is the time to embroider it!

Dragons fighting against knights, dragons sleeping at the top of a hoard, dragons flying above woods, lakes, fjords, mountains; dragons eating or scaring virgins, a dragon mother surrounded by kids, dragons who just lost their fight against the knight (or the other way round), ... just take a journey through your memories and the old stories you read in books or you've been told - lets bring the old legends to life again! :)
...and if your embroidery is based on an old myth - I really wouldn't mind if you tell us the old myth by posting a picture of your embroidery and a short text telling the legend (and if you don't like to post it by yourself, you can still send me your photo and your text and I will do that for you).

Thinking of all people and also the newcomers in some regions, who maybe haven't done a lot of wool embroidery till now, I would ask the lords and ladies who have some experience in wool embroidery to screw up their courage and to offer one or more wool embroidery classes at the next events they will attend or at a private embroidery & sewing evening for your local group - it would be great to see more lovely applique, intarsia,... and all the other possible kinds of wool embroidery in the future!

And last but not least - because of the great support and interest into our first guild project shown by the local guild in Aarnimetsä, the second guild project will be assembled by the local guild in Aarnimetsä under the gentle guidance of the local guild head Lady Fiora. Many thanks to Lady Fiora for her great help.

...and again the artisan who makes the most patches will get a small embroidered gift from the guild head. :)

This month I am again very happy to present another lovely project to you and to feature a project in progress of the very talented Fru Renika Rikardsdottir:

Renika is also a member of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild", which is a guild of the Kingdom of Drachenwald within the SCA and she is a member of Nordmark (Sweden). :)

And some words of Renika about this project:

A fourteenth century buttoned dress supposed to be covered in embroidery, at least the waist and arms... Acorns, oakleaves and when I get around to it, maybe a squirrel or two... The dress is sewn in a rather heavy dark green wool, lined with a finer yellow wool and embroidered in wool of many colours.

Great news!!! I am very glad to point you to the first lovely patches for the "We have Dragons" guild project done by Ida Juhanantytär. Inspired by the "Opus Anglicanum" class of Lady Petronilla at the Aarnimetsä Academy Ida started to try out the "Split Stitch" technique and as you can see at the pictures of the posting, she is doing very well... and it seems that she found a new favourite embroidery technique. :)

2nd Guild Project - "We have Dragons"

- Fabric: wool

- Fabric size: 20,0 x 20,0 cm (7,9 x 7,9 inch) + ca. 1,5 cm (0,6 inch) Surplus for sewing

- Fabric color: every color allowed

- Embroidery: every technique allowed

- Important restrictions: 1) at least one dragon per patch (or more!) ; 2) the basic fabric for the patch should be wool, you can use silk, linen, wool, metal,... (thread or fabric) to embroider it

- End date: October 2011 (please send in your patches till 1st of October)

- The project is open to everyone - you don't need to be a Guild member to join this project.

- Every embroidery technique and skill is welcome - please don't hesitate to contact me if you are interested!!

If you ever had a favourite picture or story including at least one or more dragons - this is the time to embroider it!

...and again the artisan who makes the most patches will get a small embroidered gift from the guild head. :)

...why Aaaargh? *lol* not everyone is a fan of German Brick Stitch (which I can very good understand after struggling with this technique for some times now) but you should read more about it yourself... ;)

...but German Brick stitch is just one technique out of many others - I like her embroidered letters - yeah, you should definitely check out the other pics ;)

Spring is near, but winter still covers many landscapes of our wonderful kingdom with snow and ice. Therefore I am very happy that I may present a lovely and colorful wallhanging project of a Guild member to you - even if the nature refuses to show its beautiful colors, Honor of Restormels beautiful wallhanging in Bayeux style brings the colors back to us, including also many lovely memories concerning the reign of Honor and John Peregrine of Restormel. I am planning to attend Raglan this year and I also think it would be great to see many banners at this event and also at other events - I will make a banner for the Guild with our Guild sign for Raglan and I hope some of you will join me in making banners - let's make this world a more colorful one. Dragons fighting against knights, dragons sleeping at the top of a hoard, dragons flying above woods, lakes, fjords, mountains; dragons eating or scaring virgins, a dragon mother surrounded by kids, dragons who just lost their fight against the knight (or the other way round), ... just take a journey through your memories and the old stories you read in books or you've been told - lets bring the old legends to life again! :)

...and if your embroidery is based on an old myth - I really wouldn't mind if you tell us the old myth by posting a picture of your embroidery and a short text telling the legend (and if you don't like to post it by yourself, you can still send me your photo and your text and I will do that for you).

Thinking of all people and also the newcomers in some regions, who maybe haven't done a lot of wool embroidery till now, I would ask the lords and ladies who have some experience in wool embroidery to screw up their courage and to offer one or more wool embroidery classes at the next events they will attend or at a private embroidery & sewing evening for your local group - it would be great to see more lovely applique, intarsia,... and all the other possible kinds of wool embroidery in the future!

And last but not least - because of the great support and interest into our first guild project shown by the local guild in Aarnimetsä, the second guild project will be assembled by the local guild in Aarnimetsä under the gentle guidance of the local guild head Lady Fiora. Handwoven Fabrics and Anglo-Saxon Bags

Greetings to my illustrious fellow artisans,
In repsonse to Racaire's request for more project postings, I'm sharing my contrinbution to the Estrella Gift Basket.
This project was an excellent experience in being able to change my plan midstream and serendipity.
I woven a turned herringbone fabric in Harrisville Shetland wool, Purple and Gold as I started my project after we knew who we were exchanging with. My original plan was to weave fabric to use to make one large Legionnare's bag. However once I had woven the fabric and done rigid heddle straps, I began to mock the bag up. I did not like the way that the reinforcement straps cut up to weave of the fabric, so I went to plan B. I had previosly asked Lady Siubhan, formerly of the Dragon's Embroidery Guild now back in Lochac, to send me a page from Anglo-Saxon Dress in England. The page I requested showed a satchel found with female remains. That page also showed a belt pouch found with some male remains. As luck would have it I had just enough fabric to make similar bags in my handwoven cloth, approximately 8" x 11 " each.

I lined the bags with linen to prevent undue stretching of the wool over time.

Finally, I used the rigid heddle straps to make the belt loops on the bag and had enough leftover to send as a complimentary belt for the women's satchel.

I am now working on a set of 15th C garb for Coronet and embroidering a 7th C Persian hat and headband. I will post pictures once they are done and/or I return from Coronet.

I proudly present a really awesome and outstanding project of a member of the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild to you:

~ Honor of Restormels lovely Bayeux style tapestry ~

Honors thoughts about the project:

The reason for the project was to make a tapestry in the style of the Bayeux for our home and we decided to chronicle our reign. The finished product is about 22 feet long and hangs in our den. :) It is DMC cotton on Linen – mostly because I am allergic to wool. I know there are a lot of colors and things which are out of place in a Bayeux style… like the pink bunny, but there are reasons for each thing there and much is to honour special people. I also wanted something more colorful for my home than the original Bayeux tapestry has to offer. :)

"Greetings!

I have gotten a few questions about giftbaskets because there seems to be a lot of different names for them circulating which has caused some confusion.
People don't seem to know who to contact concerning items for giftbaskets and how many Kingdoms that will be recieveing the gifts.
So here goes:

Pennsic giftbasket - that is a giftbasket that is given away by the Royalty during the state dinner at Pennsic. Nowadays we get an assigned Kingdom to exchange gifts with hence we no longer need to produce big amounts of the same type of object, we do however need to get together a kick ass basket to show of the splendure of the artisans of the Kingdom! This giftbasket is my own pet project and if anyone wants to contribute to this you should contact me, Katheryn Hebenstreitz.

Estrella giftbasket - this is a giftbasket that is given away by our Royalty IF they decide to go to Estrella. This far it has only happened at rare occasions and our current King and Queen WILL go to Estrella! This giftbasket has also switched into being an exchange with only ONE Kingdom (lets hope it stays this way!), and it is Their Majesties chamberlain, Viscountess Whilja who is in charge of getting items for this years giftbasket. The Kingdom to recieve the Drachenwald giftbasket is Calontir.

The Queens Tea gifts - when it was decided that you would only swap gifts with one Kingdom at Pennsic, some Qeens felt that they wanted to give away something small to all other Queens during a Queens Tea. This has been different every year - one year there was an actual gift exchange (as far as I remember) and other years the Queen hosting the tea has been giving her guests some gifts. And each Queen can host her own Queens Tea during Pennsic so this one is a bit tricky to deal with. Previously Duchess Fiona has graciously taken on the task to get objects together for this new addition to the giftlist. I am however unsure who will be in charge this upcoming Pennsic. This is a rather straining task since you need to get basically 18 small gifts together - preferebly similar/the same items in each…

Queens basket - the only conclusion I can draw is that this has become a short name of the above described Queens Tea gifts. :D

Now, beyond all theese giftbaskets the Royalty is ALWAYS in need of largess! They need something to give all those who catch their attention and that perhaps can't recieve an award but who should get recognized by getting a gift from the Royalty.
And putting all theese things together it makes for a huge amount of items that the Royalt needs to a) look good b) make people happy c) make Drachenwald look as awesome as it is by giving the most fabulous gifts at events across the pond!

So please, anyone who has some time to spare - make something that can be included in any of the above baskets or the general largess!
Now I will go back to the embroidery I am making as a part of the Estrella giftbasket that King Vitus and Queen Eleonora will hand over at Estrella!

Again a new year started and the gentle Majesties King Vitus and Queen Eleanora are ruling our beautiful kingdom now.

The Guild Heads résumé concerning 2010:
A new year is also always a good time to take a short look back at the last year - with the beginning of October 2010 I started my 4th year as Guild Head and I am still very happy with the progress of our Guild - the very first guild project started fine and many artisans contributed to it. I am still overwhelmed by the great number of participating artisans in and outside of Drachenwald contributing to this great project and also the great and positive response this project has got. Also the second guild project for 2011 was brought on its way and many artisans already started to find an inspiration for the next project. I am very looking forward to the next months and all the pictures of lovely embroidery for the guild projects we will get to see...

Update concerning the 1st guild project for 2010 "Coat of Arms Wallhanging for Drachenwald":
Fru Renika assembled the very first "Coat of Arms Wallhanging for Drachenwald" by using all the patches she got before coronation - you can see a photo of the lovely wallhanging uploaded to my Flickr account by courtesy of Fru Renika at our Workshop blog here:

According to Fru Renika the wallhanging was presented at 12th Night Coronation, very well received and got a lot of attention during the event.

Fru Renika decided to start another wallhanging with all "latecomers" because some patches are still on their way therefore:
This is YOUR CHANCE to contribute a patch with the coa of your or another group if you can't find it at the first wallhanging and it is also a great opportunity for all artisans who volunteered to do a patch and haven't finished it till now! ...and it is also a great chance for every artisan who would like to contribute their first or 'just' another patch for this awesome project!
The new deadline for the second wallhanging is: end of April
If you would like to contribute a patch for the second "Coat of Arms Wallhanging for Drachenwald" - please contact me or Fru Renika.

2nd Guild Project - "We have Dragons"

- Fabric: wool
- Fabric size: 20,0 x 20,0 cm (7,9 x 7,9 inch) + ca. 1,5 cm (0,6 inch) Surplus for sewing
- Fabric color: every color allowed
- Embroidery: every technique allowed
- Important restrictions: 1) at least one dragon per patch (or more!) ; 2) the basic fabric for the patch should be wool, you can use silk, linen, wool, metal,... (thread or fabric) to embroider it
- End date: October 2011 (please send in your patches till 1st of October)
- The project is open to everyone - you don't need to be a Guild member to join this project.
- Every embroidery technique and skill is welcome - please don't hesitate to contact me if you are interested!!

If you ever had a favourite picture or story including at least one or more dragons - this is the time to embroider it!
Dragons fighting against knights, dragons sleeping at the top of a hoard, dragons flying above woods, lakes, fjords, mountains; dragons eating or scaring virgins, a dragon mother surrounded by kids, dragons who just lost their fight against the knight (or the other way round), ... just take a journey through your memories and the old stories you read in books or you've been told - lets bring the old legends to life again! :)
...and if your embroidery is based on an old myth - I really wouldn't mind if you tell us the old myth by posting a picture of your embroidery and a short text telling the legend (and if you don't like to post it by yourself, you can still send me your photo and your text and I will do that for you).

Thinking of all people and also the newcomers in some regions, who maybe haven't done a lot of wool embroidery till now, I would ask the lords and ladies who have some experience in wool embroidery to screw up their courage and to offer one or more wool embroidery classes at the next events they will attend or at a private embroidery & sewing evening for your local group - it would be great to see more lovely applique, intarsia,... and all the other possible kinds of wool embroidery in the future!

And last but not least - because of the great support and interest into our first guild project shown by the local guild in Aarnimetsä, the second guild project will be assembled by the local guild in Aarnimetsä under the gentle guidance of the local guild head Lady Fiora. Many thanks to Lady Fiora for her great help.

...and again the artisan who makes the most patches will get a small embroidered gift from the guild head. :)

I just read the most recent mails of the Drachenwald Mailing List (DML) and was very pleased to read an eMail written by Mistress Bridget introducing a new royal blog:

Elizabethan Metal Thread Embroidery

Being long overdue to post here again I would like to rectify that with posting a link to my handout made for Aarnimetsä Academy this past November. I led a workshop in Elizabethan metal thread embroidery and brought fabric and thread for gentles to have a go at a few stitches.

The handout can be found off my website's Embroidery pages.

It is based on my study of one particular extant coif (which, until March 1 2011, can be taken out and examined at the Victoria & Albert museum in London). For a few of the stitches I have used diagrams from the Plimoth Plantation Embroidery Blog, and some of the diagrams Baroness Felicitas of Gotvik helped me to create.

Because I got two new membership requests recently which I couldn't approve, I think I should clarify following:

The Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild is an embroidery guild within the SCA, located in the kingdom of Drachenwald (Europe & South Africa).
Therefore only members of the SCA can become members of the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild.

"The SCA is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our "Known World" consists of 19 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which feature tournaments, royal courts, feasts, dancing, various classes & workshops, and more."

Christmas is near, the snow covers most of our beautiful kingdom with a glittering white veil and the cold weather invites most of us to keep on working at our indoor projects... :)
Apropos projects - our first guild project (for 2010) reached its end-stage and our second guild project for 2011 will officially start at the 1st of January - but you can already start to develope your ideas, get your materials and even to start with the embroidery if you like... - but now some words about our first guild project before I let you know more about the next one ;)

Concerning the 1st guild project for 2010 "Coat of Arms Wallhanging for Drachenwald":
The local guild in Nordmark and Fru Renika Rikardsdottir already started to work at the wallhanging - I am very happy to be able to share a posting (and photo) written by Fru Renika about the first steps for the assembling with you:

Long time I was afraid that I wouldn't find a theme that would be as good as this one until the name of an event of the shire of Adamastor catched my eye in the "Dragons Tale" - Here Be Dragons - and immediately I thought: yes, they are right, we indeed have dragons! Many thanks to the shire of Adamastor in South Africa! :)

Finally, a small report on the progress of our project...

I´ve started to sort through and plan the outlay of the final wallhaning during Kingdom University, with some assistance. Since I knew that more patches were on the way, I haven´t started sewing the patches together, merely sorted them four by four. My plan is to have it assembled as much as possible for Coronation, so that we may present it there. The picture is showing only a small selection of all wonderful patches that have reached me and my happy little mail-box so far.

Little news from Aarnimetsä

Hi everyone!

I had promised to report to Racaire in time for this report, but forgot it
completely - I feel so ashamed :(

So here's little news from Aarnimetsä:

We had a little workshop for the kingdom wallhanging project in Gudgel wars.
However it was extremely hot&humid that week, so not that many people showed
up. In spite of that Aarnimetsäns have been very active in the project: Lady
Petronilla made amazingly many patches, and both Ida Juhanantytär and Amal
binti Hamid Al-Chania have been very active and productive also. Vivat for
them!

We had a local guild meeting in Hukka Sunday meeting in Sebtember. There
were some people new to medieval embroidery who would like to learn more,
and hopefully become guild members soon!

Next big thing in Aarnimetsä will be the Aarnimetsä Academy. There are many
interesting classes, even some on embroidery. Lady Petronilla of London will
teach a class on Opus Anglicanum -embroidery and Lady Lia de Thornegge will
teach Elizabethan metal thread embroideries. That will be very intresting!

I eagerly await the new wallhanging challenge and dragons!

Report of Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild - Drachenwald

Time Period: 16. May 2010 - 15. November 2010 / 2nd report 2010

I am very happy to welcome five new guild members since the last semi-annual report.

Concerning the first guild project "Coat of Arms Wallhanging for Drachenwald":
The guild project successfully started during January. The Nordmark local guild under the gentle guidance of the local Guild head fru Renika volunteered to assemble the wallhanging and started the assembling of the wallhanging at November University 2010. Still artisans all over Drachenwald are working to finish their patches for the Wallhanging and I suppose nearly all finished patches will arrive fru Renika till the end of this year. Besides the great dedication of fru Renika and lady Fiora for this project I would also like to point out that lady Petronilla finished the most patches for the wallhanging project - she received a small gift embroidered by the Guild head for her great work. Many heartily thanks to the local guild in Nordmark and Fru Renika, the local guild in Aarnimetsä and lady Fiora, lady Petronilla and all artisans inside and outside the borders of our lovely kingdom who took part in this awesome project. I am sure this wallhanging will be a great decoration for many events in the future and I am very looking forward to see the ultimate result.

This years guild project is going to be assembled by the local guild in Nordmark and will stay with the members of the local guild in Nordmark who will take it to as many events as possible.
We are already planning the guild project for next year, which will be assembled by the local guild in Aarnimetsä under the guidance of lady Fiora and which will stay with the local guild in Aarnimetsä who will also take it to as many events as possible. The next project will include wool as material and dragons - and again a small gift embroidered by the Guild head for the artisan who creates the most patches. More information about the second guild project will be sent out as soon as the details are worked out.

Dear honourable Lords and Ladies,
dear gentle members of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

It's nearly November now and I know that many of you are already preparing to travel to University or send their patches for the "Coat of Arms Wallhanging for Drachenwald" to the Nordmark project-coordinator Fru Renika Rikardsdottir (if you need her address please contact me).

I am very happy that the Nordmark local guild volunteered to start the assembling of the wallhanging at University - unfortunately I am not able to travel to University but I am sure the local Guild head Fru Renika will do a great job and I wish anyone of you who attends University a great event and a lot of fun for the work at the wallhanging!

Once again many thanks to the local guild in Nordmark and Fru Renika Rikardsdottir!

...and also a big thank you to Lady Petronilla, the artisan who finished the most patches for the wallhanging project - I was very happy to see her here in Vienna at the start of October and that I was able to give her a small embroidered needle roll as a 'thank you' for all her lovely patches.

Some time ago I decided to give a gift to the lord or lady who finishes the most patches for the wallhanging and Petronilla did an outstanding job by finishing patch after patch after patch ...

...such a talented embroiderer but she had no needleroll till now... now she is the owner of a small Klosterstich needle roll with a medieval rose :)

...and finally Hedwigs patches for the wallhanging - one for Drachenwald and one for our shire (Ad Flumen Caerulum) :)

She made a small mistake concerning the size of the patch for our shire but I hope a lady assembling it at University can add two small laurel wreaths and make the whole patch a little bit smaller that it can be used - unfortunately I got the patch yesterday and couldn't change it myself because today during the morning I handed all patches to my friend Petronilla before we started our textile shopping and museum program for today - she is visiting Vienna this weekend and she will mail them with her patches from Germany to Sweden... :)

Many thanks to Petronilla for her help - for mailing them from Germany and all the beautiful patches she made! :)

I am very happy that I may share Rose Chandlers lovely embroidered 'Silver Guard' token with you - outstanding work for a 'novice embroiderer' (her own words)!

...and I hope some of you will get inspired by this lovely token and join the Token Challenge of Meisterinne Katheryn Hebenstreitz - don't mind - there is always a need for tokens, items for the 'Queens Basket' or our Pennsic basket and this here is 'just' one of many possible stitches and tokens you can make... :)

Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild - Summer Newsletter September 2010 - Update Wallhanging Project! Token Challenge! Pennsic Giftbasket!

Dear honourable Lords and Ladies,
dear gentle members of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

The summer break for the newsletter was rather long but I am very happy to be able to start with a great information:

Under the guidance of the Nordmark project-coordinator & regional Guild head Fru Renika Rikardsdottir the Nordmark local guild volunteered to start the assembling of the wallhanging at University.

Therefore please forward your patches to Fru Renika Rikardsdottir - she will also attend Civil War in Juneborg in October and can take your patches there if you don't travel to University. For all lords and ladies who won't attend Civil War or University please contact me or Fru Renika and we will find a way - if you already sent your patches to me, please don't worry, I will forward them to Fru Renika.

Again I would like to point out Fru Renikas (Nordmark) and Lady Fioras (Aarnimetsä) great job concerning the "Coat of Arms Wallhanging for Drachenwald" project as well as Lady Petronilla who has finished more patches for the wallhanging than any other volunteer and Mistress Johanna who has kindly donated an embroidery frame to the Aarnimetsä Embroidery Guild which "will be given to the Aarnimetsän broiderer who makes the most of the patches for the wallhanging" - a very nice idea and gift :)

- Fabric: linen fabric

-> Shires, Cantons & Strongholds: 10,0 x 10,0 cm (3,94 x 3,94 inch) + ca. 1,5 cm (0,59 inch) Surplus for sewing
-> Kingdom, Principality, Barony coat of arms: 20,0 x 20,0 cm + ca. 1,5 cm (0,59 inch) Surplus for sewing

Dear honourable Lords and Ladies,
gentle members of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

I am sure that all of us are aware that there is always a great need for helping hands, scrolls and tokens and the solution can be quite easy because help always starts with what YOU do and anyone of us actually does!

Concerning helping hands please ask the event steward or kitchen crew at your next event or just offer help if you see that help is needed,
concerning scrolls please feel free to contact your signet scribe (http://dragonscribes.blogspot.com/ - signet@drachenwald.sca.org) who offers help for anyone who would like to start with calligraphy and/or illumination and
concerning tokens - yes, that's a little bit more difficult and I am very happy to support & to forward the following challenge of Meisterinne Katheryn Hebenstreitz to you :)

But first I would like to thank all the helping hands that make our events so great and beautiful, the great artisans who create all the beautiful scrolls, tokens and gifts that make our dream more beautiful and create great moments of joy many of us will never forget... :)

Greetings embroiderers!

I have a small challange for you!
The Kingdom is in a dire need of award tokens. And now, please don't stop reading!

It is never nice to get an award and then never recieve the token to proove that you were once made a member of a certain order.
While taking us up on this challange you will make some of your friends and perhaps family very happy the day they recieve some recognition.

The trickiest one to get tokens for seems to be the Silver Guard. This award is suposed to come with a bracelet with the order symbol on.
But what if we make white linnen ties with the symbol embroidered on that the fighters can tie arround their upper arm?
I presented this idea to the Queen who got very excited and also promised a prize for the embroiderer that makes a tie with as many period stitches as possible while making it!
There is a crosstitch pattern avaliable for the dragon itself that can be easily adapted to hold the sword if anyone wants to do a later period kind of dragon. Let me know if you want that charter and I will send it to you!
Once you have made your Silver Guard or perhaps even Guards – let me know and I will find a suitable place to send them so that the King and Queen will be able to recieve them to pass them on to new members of the Order.
I hope that I will see many of theese embroidered Silver Guards around in a while!

PS. I am contributing to the project of creating a bigger pool of tokens by making 5 Panaches myself. If I find time after that I promise to make a Silver Guard tie aswell!
